Lamplighter’s Round

A lamplighter does not own the lamps. He is trusted with them — and he has to get all the way around before dark.

Exam coversLessons 8, 9, 10 + Rosary
Test typesMC · Story · Situational · Prayer
Exam50 points

Five stops on the round. Each one is a lamp you have to light: my own life, the life of others, my own heart, the circuit of beads that carries all three, and the Divine Mercy that keeps the whole street burning. Tap every card, answer the checks, and the lamp at the top lights up. Then walk the whole exam.

Stop 01 · Lesson 8

Jesus Tells Me to Take Care of My Life

pp. 110–119 · Fatima · the talents · St. Mary MacKillop

Fatima was blind and seriously ill, and she still sang. Not because she ignored what was wrong — because she refused to spend her days on the one thing she did not have.

Memory trick — the steward’s three verbs

KEEP it · GROW it · GUARD it — but never OWN it.

KEEP — nutritious food, enough sleep and rest, exercise, keeping clean. GROW — develop the talents God gave you. GUARD — preserve life: do not harm it or carelessly put yourself in danger. And the last part is the one the test hunts for: God appointed you steward, not owner. He stays the sole Master of life.

You missed this one in Quiz 1

“God is the source of life, but once He gives us life, it becomes completely ours to do with as we choose.” — FALSE. A steward is handed the keys, not the deed. Say the trick out loud: keep it, grow it, guard it — but never own it.

Stop 02 · Lesson 9

Jesus Teaches Me to Respect the Life of Others

pp. 121–130 · Hapag-Asa · the Fifth Commandment · St. Maximilian Kolbe

“You shall not kill” sounds like a rule you could keep by accident. Jesus made it much harder: He went after the anger that starts it, and the hunger that quietly ends it.

Memory trick — the Fifth has three K’s and one C

Don’t KILL · don’t KEEP AWAY · don’t KEEP ANGER — then CARE.

KILL — direct killing and murder, and abortion, since life is protected from the moment a child is conceived. KEEP AWAY — depriving people of food, clothing, shelter, health care, a fair salary. KEEP ANGER — Jesus prohibited anger, calling it the root of killing. CARE — the commandment is not only a prohibition; it calls for action to protect and enhance life. Three NOs and one YES.

Easily confusedWhat it really says
Fifth Commandment“You shall not kill.” Protects life because God alone is the Giver of life — so no human person has the right to take another’s life.
Sixth Commandment“You shall not commit adultery.” Lesson 10 — purity, the act.
Ninth Commandment“You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.” Lesson 10 — purity, the desire.
Lamp 2 — locked

Stop 03 · Lesson 10

Jesus Teaches Me to Value Purity

pp. 139–143 · Glinda’s dress · modesty · St. Maria Goretti

Glinda’s grandmother did not tell her that her dress was pretty. She told her that what she wears in church is about respect — and that is where purity starts.

Memory trick — Six does, Nine wants

SIX says don’t DO it. NINE says don’t even WANT it. Both are OLD Testament.

In the Old Testament, God taught His people purity by giving them the Sixth (“You shall not commit adultery” — the act) and the Ninth (“You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife” — the desire). Jesus went beyond both: blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.

Two you missed in Quiz 2

“In the New Testament, God taught His people purity by giving them the Sixth and Ninth Commandments” — FALSE, it was the Old Testament. And: “When our hearts are pure, we can love people even with selfish intentions” — FALSE. CFC says purity makes a person free for love and to love, which means loving people WITHOUT selfish intentions. One word, three points.

Memory trick — where purity comes from

BAPTISM gives it · CONFIRMATION strengthens it · the EUCHARIST feeds it.

Purity is a virtue, a gift from the Holy Spirit, given at Baptism, strengthened in the Sacrament of Confirmation, and continually nourished by the Body of Christ in Holy Communion. You do not have to earn it. You have to keep feeding it.

Stop 04 · The Holy Rosary

Prayers and Mysteries

The circuit · the decade pattern · the four sets and their days

You already drew this one perfectly — 10 out of 10, with “This is nice!” in red beside it. This stop is here to keep it that way, and to add the part the diagram did not ask for: the Mysteries.

Memory trick — every decade knocks five times

ANNOUNCE · OUR FATHER · TEN Hail Marys · GLORY BE · FATIMA

Same five, ten times over, for every single decade. Before the first decade you do the tail: Sign of the Cross and the Apostles’ Creed on the crucifix → Our Father on the first large bead → 3 Hail Marys on the three small beads → Glory Be, then announce the First Mystery.

Memory trick — the week

Thursday is the only LIGHT. Joy twice, Sorrow twice, Glory twice.

Joyful — Monday & Saturday. Sorrowful — Tuesday & Friday. Glorious — Wednesday & Sunday. Luminous — Thursday, alone. Three sets get two days each; only the Luminous (the Mysteries of Light) stands by itself, so if you remember Thursday you can count the rest out from there.

Set & daysThe five Mysteries, in order
Joyful
Mon & Sat
1 Annunciation · 2 Visitation · 3 Nativity · 4 Presentation in the Temple · 5 Finding of Jesus in the Temple
Luminous
Thursday
1 Baptism in the Jordan · 2 Wedding at Cana · 3 Proclamation of the Kingdom · 4 Transfiguration · 5 Institution of the Eucharist
Sorrowful
Tue & Fri
1 Agony in the Garden · 2 Scourging at the Pillar · 3 Crowning with Thorns · 4 Carrying of the Cross · 5 Crucifixion and Death
Glorious
Wed & Sun
1 Resurrection · 2 Ascension · 3 Descent of the Holy Spirit · 4 Assumption of Mary · 5 Coronation of Mary

Stop 05 · The Divine Mercy Prayer

O Blood and Water

The prayer, word for word — and the four words people always swap

This is the one prayer on the round where being almost right is the whole danger. Every line of it has a plainer word sitting next to the real one, waiting for you to reach for it.

Memory trick — the four words that get swapped

EXPIRED, not died. FOUNT, not fountain. ENVELOP, not cover. EMPTY, not pour.

You know what the prayer means, so your hand will write the everyday word. The exam wants the prayer’s own word. Read the four out loud as a set before you sleep — they are the only part of this stop you can actually get wrong.

Memory trick — the shape of the prayer

He EXPIRED → it GUSHED → it OPENED → we TRUST.

Four movements, in order. Jesus expired; the source of life gushed forth for souls; the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world; and we answer, “I trust in You!” Then the Trisagion three times. If you can say those four verbs, you can rebuild the prayer around them.

The real thing

THE FULL ROUND

Four parts, in the order the pointers sheet lists them: Multiple Choice, Story Analysis, Situational Analysis, Prayer Completion. 50 points. The stop checks along the way are practice and are not counted here.

Part I · Multiple Choice

20 points. Saints, commandments, and the lines the test likes to flip.

Part II · Story Analysis

6 points. A story you have not read before — it needs all three lessons at once.

The story

The Candle at Kalawaan. Rafa is twelve and the fastest runner in Grade 6. Lately he has been skipping lunch to buy load, and last Friday he joined a “breath-hold challenge” a vlogger dared students to film. At home, the family has been stretching Lola Pacing’s maintenance medicine — one tablet every other day — so there is money for the wifi. In class, Ivan calls Rafa walang kuwenta in front of everyone, and Rafa has decided to wait for him after dismissal. Meanwhile Sanya, the new girl, now keeps her PE jacket zipped over her uniform, because a classmate has been photographing the girls without asking and passing it around. Rafa has seen the photos. He has not said anything, because he is afraid of losing his barkada. On Saturday, Coach tells him his speed is a gift and asks him to run for the school.

Part III · Situational Analysis

6 points. What should you do? Every option sounds reasonable. One is right.

Part IV · Prayer Completion

18 points. Type the missing word. Spelling is forgiven; meaning is not — but where a near-word means the same thing, you get the point and the prayer’s own word.

Multiple Choice 0/20 · Story 0/6 · Situational 0/6 · Prayer 0/18

The night before

One screen. Everything.

Stop 01 · My life

KEEP it · GROW it · GUARD it — but never OWN it.

Keep = food, sleep, exercise, clean. Grow = talents, for the neighbor too. Guard = don’t harm it or carelessly endanger it. God is the sole Master of life. Mary MacKillop: Sister Mary of the Cross, Brown Joeys, feast Aug 8.

Stop 02 · Their life

Don’t KILL · don’t KEEP AWAY · don’t KEEP ANGER — then CARE.

Protected from conception. Depriving food, shelter, health care, fair pay also violates it. Anger is the root of killing. Be reconciled before you offer your gift. Kolbe: took the man’s place, feast Aug 14, patron of drug dependents, prisoners, families, Pro-Life.

Stop 03 · My heart

SIX says don’t DO it. NINE says don’t even WANT it. Both are OLD Testament.

Purity: Baptism gives it, Confirmation strengthens it, the Eucharist feeds it. Pure of heart = all attention on God, not money, popularity, sex, or power. CFC: free for love and to love = loving without selfish intentions. Goretti: age 11, canonized 1950, youngest saint, feast July 6.

Stop 04 · The beads

ANNOUNCE · OUR FATHER · TEN · GLORY BE · FATIMA

Tail: Cross + Creed → Our Father → 3 Hail Marys → Glory Be. End: Hail Holy Queen. Days: Joyful Mon/Sat, Sorrowful Tue/Fri, Glorious Wed/Sun, Luminous Thursday alone.

Stop 05 · Divine Mercy

EXPIRED not died · FOUNT not fountain · ENVELOP not cover · EMPTY not pour

He expired → it gushed forth → the ocean of mercy opened up → I trust in You! O Blood and Water, from the Heart of Jesus. Then three times: Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One.

The three the quizzes already caught

Not ours · Not New · Not “even with”

Life never becomes completely ours. The Sixth and Ninth are Old Testament. Pure hearts love without selfish intentions. And respect for others is not conditional on how they treat us.
